White House unveils some new food labeling rules

For a few industrious upper­ classmen, the Echoing Green Public Service Fellowship, an exciting post-graduate oppor­ tunity, w ill provide vast experi­ ence in the business world and the opportunity to help others. “This fellowship is one way to learn amazing sk ills tha t you can take anywhere,” said Dolly Saengswang, program director for Echoing Green. “ It is a oneyear fellowship applied fo r in your senior year which allows you to go out and start a public service program . We w an t to help you c rea te y o u r own vision of social change.” The fe llowship consists o f a $15,000 stipend, which is to be used in some type o f non-profit venture to benefit the commu­ nity. Saengswang characterized the stipend as “ seed m oney” w hich a young en trep reneu r could use in fund-raising , staff d eve lopm en t, o r any o th e r necessary endeavor. “Think of th is fe llo w s h ip as a springboard,” she said. “ I know it is a hal'd time and th e re are a lo t o f o p tio n s ,” Saengswang said. “ This is an o pp o rtu n ity to do som eth ing very different from what most of your friends are doing.” “ Fund raising is intim idating, and it takes up a lot o f time. It ’s especially hard fo r a tw entytw o ye a r-o ld w ith no tra c k reco rd to get money. As a foundation, our stipend gives you some backing, some credi­ b ility in a ttem p ting to so lic it m ore funds fro m o th e r sources,” she said. A ccord ing to Saengswang, the fe llow sh ip does not stop there, however. “ Unlike many other fellowships, we also at­ tempt to give advice and access to technical expertise in addi­ tion to money. We try to get you hooked up w ith other fellows, and also t r y to he lp you deve lop re la t io n s h ip s w ith more experienced n o n -p ro fit leaders through conferences.” “They are extremely good at m a k in g sure th a t w h a t you w a n t to do gets done ,” said Curt Peterson, ‘87.
